As you can see by this blog’s title, our topic is about getting and staying healthy from a mental-health perspective. Quite often, we hear about how to stay physically healthy – good nutrition, decent sleep, some exercise – those types of things really do help us all work toward or maintain good physical health. What’s really interesting to me is that some of the very same things that help us stay physically fit can help us stay mentally fit. Good nutrition, decent sleep, and some reasonable exercise can help each … Continue reading →

As odd as this might sound, my mother was upset when I declared my intention to go to medical school. It wasn’t the mountain of debt I was sure to incur since I’d already figured out how to get Uncle Sam to pick up the bill (a small deal that put me in a military uniform for a decade). It wasn’t the fact that medical school would delay the litter of bouncing grandbabies she wanted to fawn over. And it certainly wasn’t because she’d miss me—she’d already seen too much … Continue reading →

May is a busy month for families. So many happy events occur during the month; with first communion, confirmation, graduations, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, many families gather with extended family and friends to celebrate. The most frequent question that I hear throughout the year, but especially in December and May is, “Do you have a healthy dessert?” That question puzzles me every time. For me the word healthy means health-promoting. A food filled with nutrients like protein, carbohydrate, fiber, vitamins and minerals. So for me, the healthiest dessert is … Continue reading →

I had a spine procedure at Nebraska spine hospital recently. This is the my first surgery of any significance. From the phone consult prior to my arrival through procedure completion I was treated great. My hospital stay was excellent and each and every staff was concerned for me and treated me respectfully. It was evident the staff lived and believed in their mission. The follow up phone evaluation from hospital staff was easy to do and I could tell they were listening to me. Much to my surprise, today I … Continue reading →

This summer marks the 25th straight year that I’ve been running on a regular basis. Over the last quarter of a century I’ve done so many five- and 10-kilometer races that I’ve lost count. I’ve competed in 10-milers, half-marathons, 3-k and 25-k runs and every “k” in between, and enough marathons that my knees are starting to hold a grudge. Not that I win any of these, mind you. I’ve always been a fairly mediocre runner—generally placing in the top third of any race but never talented enough to post … Continue reading →

I had many great suggestions this week regarding what to blog about. For those who recommended I blog about grief and loss, PTSD, marital struggles, and other topics I give you a big thank you! I will do my best to write on those topics in the near future. The topic of bullying, however, came up quite a bit this week – so that’s where this blog is headed. Conflict, as most of us know, is a normal part of life. As adults, we are often faced with various frustrations … Continue reading →

Whenever I quote the latest recommendation from the American Heart Association (AHA) or the USDA concerning seafood, I am met with the same statement, “I do not like fish”. Sometimes I wonder how this could be true. During the Lenten season, the social halls at the local Catholic Churches are filled with happy customers eating fried or baked fish and all the trimmings. Maybe it is simply that people do not like to prepare and cook seafood at home. Did you know that the AHA and the USDA recommend eating … Continue reading →

The military has a long tradition of mixing warfare and tobacco. Years ago the army included a pack of smokes in every C-ration distributed to the troops; as a result it was more common for soldiers to take up smoking than to remain abstinent. The tobacco industry insured itself a whole generation of addicted consumers by volunteering their product to help the war effort. Years later, of course, we’ve inherited this tradition in the form of lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease among our veterans. When I was a young … Continue reading →

Alegent Health is blessed to have several excellent medication providers and therapists who work with adolescents. As you can imagine, there are so many challenges to being in junior high and high school these days: grades, friends, dating, sex, family situations – there are so many internal and external influences. Anyone who is the parent of an adolescent knows exactly what I’m talking about. Adolescence can be a very rich and rewarding time for our kids. They are making changes physically and mentally, and preparing to enter into the world … Continue reading →

I recently asked a patient about his compliance with therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and got an odd response. “What does it matter to you if I use my CPAP?” The CPAP to which he referred is the mask that OSA sufferers wear at night to improve their oxygen levels during sleep. On one level I can understand his question. This is a sleeping problem, after all—not exactly the realm of cardiology. Why should I care if he starts his day refreshed or drags himself out of bed feeling … Continue reading →
